THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Deep Ellum Cafe Restaurant Review:

It’s always an iffy proposition to resurrect a beloved local restaurant, but local nightlife impresario Whit Myers and chef Jared R. Coffey have managed to pull it off, evoking the Zeitgeist of the original 1980s café, a funky-friendly affair with far better food than the décor would suggest. A steaming bowl of Thai brewed mussels in a piquant coconut milk sauce leaves us sipping the liquid long after the plump, juicy mussels have disappeared. Roasted red bell pepper soup shows strong, the rich, creamy broth topped with a jalapeño coulis. We also recommend the pepper-crusted tuna, served exactly as requested. The venison meatloaf is a bit perplexing, a sweet note is out of place with its savory flavors, but oh my, those smoked mashed potatoes make up for it all. Though small, the wine list offers a lot of winners and all are reasonably priced.
