Marin needs more restaurants like Dish, where dramatic style combines with good food and casual, family-friendly comfort. There’s a communal table, unusual stone room divider centered with a see-through gas fireplace, large, modern wall sculptures and an overall feeling that this is a hip spot even if it’s in a small town. The menu features many dishes made with locally grown and organic ingredients. Salads can be complex, such as the beet assortment with satsuma, shaved fennel, organic mâche and pistachio vinaigrette. Baby-soft house-made burrata is paired with oven-dried tomatoes, arugula and Marcona almonds for a distinctive twist on bruschetta. If you eat beef, the natural flatiron steak with charred sweet onions, Point Reyes Blue cheese and Parisian-style frites is utterly satisfying. Your eyes will pop with an order of frozen hot chocolate, a tub-size pedestal bowl filled with a frozen chocolate confection and plops of whipped cream reminiscent of the famous Serendipity’s specialty in New York.
