We want to like this casual, funky Southern restaurant more than we do, if only for the idea that relatively staid Minnesota could let go like it was Mardi Gras. The highlight of Dixie's Lake Calhoun location (they also have a restaurant in St. Paul) is the bar, a bright, open space with a junk sculpture alligator hanging over the bar. We love the tart, pungent margaritas, and like to order a side of fries (crisp and fresh and served in a cute miniature grocery bag) to make a very happy hour. The burgers, blackened shrimp quesadillas and other bar fare are also tasty, but we tend to be disappointed by the Cajun food in the dining room. The shrimp and crawfish étouffée and the jambalaya lack the spice and punch we expect, and the farm-raised catfish lacks spark. Desserts are generally to be avoided, especially the chalky key lime pie, but the pecan pie earns our sweet tooth's begrudging respect.
