Chef Takashi Fred Iwasaki used to work with Wolfgang at Chinois on Main, but at this Pasadena restaurant he is teamed with local restaurateur success siblings Gregg and Bob Smith whose Parkway Grill and Arroyo Chop House thrive nearby. Iwasaki is creating his famous California/Pan-Asian menus, which take the Easts fresh, simple ingredients and give them a piquant boost in the spice department. Some standouts: a starter of crab pot stickers with Chinese cabbage, mozzarella cheese, garlic and mustard-soy vinaigrette; entrée of Shanghai lobster with spicy ginger-black bean sauce and black mussel risotto; and dessert of a duo of crèmes brûlées (dark chocolate custard and crème ginger custard with a caramelized top).
