This gabled cottage teetering on the border of still-rural Goochland County may draw you in for tea and cake with its air of English countryside charm. While that’s not a bad idea (the apple cake, or whatever else was just baked, is topnotch), the real story here is the local produce and heritage meats. Birdsong Farm and CCL Farm, for example, share equal billing for elephant garlic and fresh herb-stuffed pork roast smothered with a Guinness beer and caramelized onion gravy. Tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces and herbs hail from about ten feet away, compliments of the backyard garden. On warm days you can dine amidst it. Inside, a small gift shop with locally crafted items divides the front dining area and counter (for take-out dinners) from a sunroom with white tablecloths. Every dish appeals with a fresh spectrum of color as in roasted pumpkin, butternut squash, acorn squash, beets and rutabagas in one called the Flavors of Autumn, but the overall aesthetic is totally green.
