El Don could be a charming white-tablecloth restaurant in Mexico City. Elegant décor, an outdoor patio and a smart young crowd make this a nice option in Houston's Mexican scene. The food and service can be hit-and-miss, yet menu highlights are sufficiently distinctive to keep us coming back. Luscious quesadillas stuffed with farmer's cheese wear a coat of sticky rose-petal jam; tiny fried taquitos with various fillings are offered gratis; and huitlacoche, the rare corn fungus, makes several appearances on the menu. We recommend the arroz al huitlacoche con calamares---a dramatic dish, both in flavor and appearance---in which the fungus imparts an earthy flavor to the rice while turning it jet-black, and white calamari sits on top with creamy lime-green avocado sauce swathing the plate. Less daring eaters might enjoy the ceviche, chilaquiles or various tacos and tortas.
