THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Eleni Estiatorio Restaurant Review

: Eleni Touhouliotis was a server for years in a typically rowdy Greek eatery, saving her tips until she could fulfill her vision of opening an elegant, modern Hellenic restaurant. Her vision is realized in this warm and inviting space. Cozy candlelit rooms are balanced by high ceilings and the bustling, visible kitchen. Many of the dishes are designed for sharing, and customers are encouraged to linger over appetizers and wine (there’s a lengthy list of Greek vintages). The menu offers the usual Greek mainstays --- spanakopita and moussaka, as well as a bounty of unusual dishes, many from Eleni's native Crete. We like the calamari, in typical Greek fashion baked with herbal seasonings rather than deep-fried. The menu will delight vegetarians with its eggplant stuffed with vegetables, and phyllo packages filled with cheese and spinach and drizzled with honey. Carnivores will enjoy the meatballs or the lamb and feta tucked into a phyllo crust. Greek salads replete with tomatoes and avocados exceed expectations. For dessert, order the daily mousse or the classic baklava. A sister restaurant, Eleni’s Philoxenia, in the Pearl District, offers similar dining.
