One of the few places for a quiet dinner conversation entre nous, this also is one of the city’s last elegant hotel dining rooms. Actually, it’s a series of rooms agleam with dark-wood paneling and crystal chandeliers. The first one, where a pianist plays standbys, offers great views of Navy Pier. All the old-fashioned trapping are on hand, from Dover sole de-boned tableside to a dessert cart, from formal service to a Cabernet- and Chardonnay-heavy wine list with prices running into the thousands. If the food isn’t as good as it should be for the money and the staff isn’t as attentive, there are pleasures to be found in monthly prix-fixe menus and innovative dishes such as an essence of oxtail soup with curry cream. Seasonal game, perhaps filet mignon of buffalo in a marrow-thyme crust, stands out, but simply prepared fish dishes also shine. Desserts tend to be hotel competent.
