Those seeking a fun night out with family or friends need turn no further than Ernesto's. A Sacramento staple for more than 25 years, Ernesto's delivers traditional Mexican food. Live mariachi and tight quarters --- not to mention dozens of tequilas --- means the dining room can get raucous at times, so this is not the place to come for a quiet, romantic meal. The menu includes favorites such as tamales and enchiladas, as well as more involved dishes. Specialties include chile verde, carne asada and "cowboy" shrimp. The fresh guacamole is some of the best in town, and the carnitas are tender and well spiced, with just the right touch of citrus. A seat on the relaxing outdoor patio is good for people-watching or throwing back a beer or cocktail on a warm summer night. On weekends traditional Mexican breakfast is served, including pozole, chilaquiles and huevos rancheros.
