Fabbro’s has the comfort, confidence and friendly service of a restaurant that has been serving the neighborhood since the 1930s. Born of a prohibition speakeasy, the black and white pictures that line the entry and smooth wood bar tell the story of an El Camino Real of the past. Chef Marcos Belfiore, who has spent time in the kitchens of Bizou, Splendido and Lulu’s in San Francisco, brings the contemporary language of California-Italian to the table. Locals of all ages fill the handsome two-room restaurant eager to sample the short but well-executed menu. Roasted chicken arrives fragrant with a seasoning of juniper, coriander and anise while the braised lamb shank shines with a red wine sauce spiked with oranges and currants. Traditional pastas like the ravioli with Gorgonzola sauce or spaghettini Bolognese satisfy with bright and hearty flavors. Tempting, regularly available specials like the seafood risotto are worth trying. The wine list offers the best of both California and Italy with plenty of half bottles of popular vintages.
