: If ever a place lived up to the term “neighborhood coffeehouse,” this is surely it. The painted bead-board building with belt ceiling fans creates a colorful space. Patrons include folks headed to the nearby Fair Grounds Racecourse while others work away on laptops. Outdoor seating, saucer-size cookies, free wireless Internet access, a lending library, and milk kept hot in communal dispensers converge in what is perhaps the city's most user-friendly café. The name Fair Grinds is both a pun based on the café's proximity to the Fair Grounds and a reference to the locally roasted fair trade coffees brewed there. For a small establishment, this place offers some standout cakes, including a “wedding cake” and a tempting tall chocolate layer cake. Vegan-friendly dishes provide options for lunch or a light dinner. |
