THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED FGT Bar Cafe Restaurant Review:
Rebranding the former W Hotel required re-concepting the restaurant itself, renamed to reflect its southern exposure: FGT stands for "fried green tomatoes." They've even come up with a fried green tomato martini for those on the edge of adventure. The café sits open to the bar, making it vulnerable to noise if the lobby is busy. Stacie Vande Wetering, previously seen at the long-closed Clubhouse at Lenox Square, does a menu that hinges on quality ingredients for its impact. Sweet Grass Dairy in Thomasville, Ga., offers its goat cheese that, crumbed and fried, enlivens a salad based on arugula and decent (but chilled) cherry tomatoes. Is the salad a wow? No, but it's quite respectable. Larger appetites may go for the whole rack of baby-back ribs with trimmings. Other Southern tastes here and there include fried pickles and a pulled pork sandwich with peach barbecue sauce. If capacity permits, finish with the Key lime tart with mango coulis. After service hours, you might pull up a chair at the bar and snack on a trio of sliders. The wine list isn't much, but there are a few good choices that are available by the glass.
