If Todd English is the Wolfgang Puck of Boston, then Figs is his stab at franchising---sort of an Olives redux. This mini-chain is wildly popular. It’s a middle-of-the-road pasta, salad, and pizza place with just enough style and substance to have mass appeal. Visually, each of the four locations is slightly different, though the general theme is casual chic. The pizza here is something to behold: A thin, gnarled, almost brittle slab of dough topped with savories from figs and prosciutto to rock shrimp and basil aioli. Savvy diners make a meal at Figs a sharefest. That way everybody can taste some warm bacon and spinach salad, wild mushroom risotto with duck confit, or Fontina polenta.
