Fio’s, the restaurant that made the Gaslamp Quarter safe for Gucci and Armani, turned 10 in 1999, which makes it one of the most venerable eateries in the area. Attribute its longevity partly to the cosmopolitan atmosphere and professional service, and partly to Chef Robert Gaffney’s thoughtful Italian menu, which takes a light-handed and light-hearted approach to traditional and contemporary Italian fare. Carefully made, flavorful sauces top the pastas, veal dishes tend to be tender and toothsome, and even the designer pizzas have a little more pizazz than they do elsewhere.
