THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED The Fiscal Agent Restaurant Review:
This classy bar is located above Barrel & Ashes in Studio City. Check in at the velvet rope and a hostess will lead you down an alleyway lined with ivy and assorted window shutters. Up a back stairway, a blue door gives way to a marble bar, dark blue-grey walls and stained glass panels that shield a low-key lounge area. Start with complimentary sparkling wine. Cocktails appear in vintage glassware and involve culinary concoctions that are difficult to make, yet approachable. For example, the "Caraway and Barley" is anise-forward and light, despite the Scotch base. Chef Michael Kahikina's small plates include Peruvian sea scallops served on the half-shell with savory nuoc cham, cilantro and cucumber. Steak tartare consists of rough-chopped top sirloin dressed with shimeji mushroom, peppers, red frill mustard and egg emulsion. Six crispy arancini join smoked tomato, crispy sage and a shower of grated Pecorino. The best dessert is boozy, of course. Airy sherry custard is topped with shaved almond, honey, butterscotch and apple.
