Freemans Restaurant Review:

Part of this Lower East Side restaurant's initial appeal is its elusive location---it lurks at the end of a dark, nondescript alley that doesn't even make it on to most maps. But finding Freemans (and actually getting a table) is only half the fun. The taxidermy-crammed interior reflects Freemans menu: feel good fare with an emphasis on game. Start with grilled cheddar toasts, "laughing bird" shrimp fritters or hot artichoke dip with crisp bread and then move on to grilled Eden Brook trout with thyme, garlic and lemon, pan-roasted pollock with stewed white beans and escarole or seared filet mignon with roasted onion, mashed potatoes and horseradish cream. Several sides, especially the mountainous mashed potatoes, could make a meal on their own. Ultimately, you'll be glad you made the trek.
