THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Gilley's Restaurant Review

: Mickey Gilley closed his Texas nightclub immortalized in the movie Urban Cowboy and opened a reasonable facsimile in a converted ballroom of The Frontier. The lively western-themed venue, complete with the renowned mechanical bull, is also known as Gilley's Saloon, Dance Hall and Bar-B-Que---the name says it all. Bales of hay are stacked against the walls, sawdust covers the floor and a giant TV screen shows videos of country stars. On the menu, Aunt Lucy's citrus-herb or barbecue-glazed rotisserie chicken and Granny's boneless chicken-fried chicken with mashed taters and country gravy pay homage to Gilley's kinfolk. Thick-sliced, beer-battered rodeo onion rings piled high on a stick are served with dipping sauces. Meat eaters will savor the hickory-smoked beef brisket with barbecue sauce on a roll or hickory wood-smoked pulled pork on a hoagie roll. The signature ribs---pork and beef---are revered. Go for the signature steak---an 18-ounce mesquite-broiled rib-bone marinated in Jack Daniels whiskey. Mom's desserts---apple pie and strawberry shortcake---cap the hearty cowboy dinner.
