Giovanni Rana Pastificio & Cucina Restaurant Review:

Giovanni Rana, the pasta-maker from Verona, has opened a restaurant in the Chelsea Market. Ignore the rustic interior and focus on the menu, which blends traditional dishes with some rather loopy (but generally very good) originals. Start with an order of unctuous, juicy fried ravioli or the octopus, which is not grilled as per usual but stewed in a tangy tomato sauce. On the long list of pastas are a Sicilian-inspired bucatini wrapped around sardines and breadcrumbs, and something called “raviolpizza,” a Frisbee-size ravioli, stuffed with tomato sauce and mozzarella and then baked like a pizza (it’s a lot better than it sounds). Finish with fried chocolate raviolis paired with stewed strawberries for dipping. Wine selections, while generally pricey, include some nice options by the glass.
