Devotees of Sonoma's The Girl & The Fig tout the quaint restaurant's ability to deliver stylish, affordable French country fare. Visitors to this second location will find the same successful formula at work in Petaluma. The beautiful restaurant, a historic Victorian house, is set on a bend of the Petaluma River that winds its way through town. A parlor room, complete with fireplace, graces the ground floor and leads out to a sunny patio. Upstairs, a sunroom with Craftsman-style details looks out over town. A charming and casual staff attends to explaining the country French menu and wine list, which offers only Rhone varietals---believed by the owner to best complement the food. Start with a steaming bowl of mussels doused in a Pernod-spiked broth or a charcuterie plate complete with pork rillettes, coppa, and spiced nuts. The house salad matches tender lettuces and crisp green beans with sharp Champagne vinaigrette. Thick mustard sauce-topped pork chops arrive with pan-fried green tomatoes and creamy mashed potatoes. Crisp matchstick fries make the steak frites dish a classic. Hearty cassoulet, rich risottos and home-style stews round out the menu. A crème brûlée or seasonal fruit crisp would make for a perfect end.
