Golden Spur Restaurant on historic Route 66 --- complete with a vintage neon sign --- provides a classic steakhouse menu in a room with a vaulted beamed ceiling, curvy booths and linen-topped tables. Start with a classic lettuce wedge or warm spinach salad, escargots or shrimp cocktail, before tucking into steaks, rack of lamb with red wine reduction, or braised short ribs. There’s also a mammoth half-pound burger served like all burgers were before chefs began adding truffles and such. Seafood options range from sand dabs to halibut to sautéed orange roughy with jalapeño tartar sauce. New York-style cheesecake and carrot cake reflect the traditional fare, while the wine list offers good value among the full-bodied reds that pair well with steaks. Overall, the prices are lower than a Ruth’s Chris or Fleming’s, so we tend to cut this place, an endangered species of sorts, a little slack.
