Most every neighborhood believes its local purveyor of Chinese food is the best. Something about getting to know the owner's family, usually after many visits and take-out orders, endears the diner to food that may be only mediocre. This Hunan-style restaurant is Sugar Land's nod to the East, and it's an admirable effort. It truly is a cut above, no doubt due to the presence of a chef who trained at Houston's popular Fu's Garden. House specialties, which are also written in Chinese---always a good sign of authenticity---include seafood in black bean sauce, crispy whole fish in Hunan sauce and chicken, beef and shrimp with green onion, a chef's special. And, like most worthy Chinese cafés, Golden Wok dishes up family dinners, which offer such better-than-usual entrées as hot chicken in red pepper sauce and curry beef.
