Gora Kadan Restaurant Review:

A one-night stay at Gora Kadan, which includes dinner and breakfast, is Japanese hospitality at its foreigner-friendly best. This renowned inn had noble beginnings as the estate of a member of the Japanese Imperial family, and for several decades now, the world’s rich and famous---along with anyone willing to book way in advance and spend at least 60,000 yen per night per person---have been visiting this mountain retreat for first-class pampering. The multi-course Kyoto-style kaiseki dinner, which is served in your room, is an unparalleled experience in formal dining. It starts with the standard assortment of incredibly fresh sashimi and tiny appetizers to tease one’s palate, followed by a series of elaborate and very delicately flavored hot and cold dishes served in beautiful pottery and lacquerware appropriate to the food and season, before ending with a simple dessert of fruit and sorbet. There is only one main menu per month, arranged by the chef to use the best ingredients available at that moment, so you basically seat yourselves comfortably for the long haul and eat---or rather, delight in---whatever is placed in front of you. Those staying longer get simpler menus and a choice of sukiyaki or shabu-shabu on additional nights.
