THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED The Gorbals Restaurant Review:

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is one of the best restaurant neighborhoods in the Big Apple, even more so with the arrival of Ilan Hall's The Gorbals. The season two Top Chef winner’s establishment occupies a loft space on the third story of Space Ninety 8, a building that also houses a trendy boutique and rooftop lounge. Communal wooden tables in a rustic-meets-industrial set-up comprises the backdrop for well-priced cross-cultural dishes with a focus on local ingredients. Combinations like broccoli marinated in soy sauce, chilies and vinegar and "chewy" dehydrated carrots with smoked brown butter and almond cakes make for light starters. Falafel-style veal sweetbreads over a ranch-flavored hummus and green garlic sauce, and banh mi poutine with thrice-cooked french fries are stand-outs. So is the inventive and fun "Jewish Lunchbox," a sort of bibimbap-in-a-tin-box medley of fried barley, poached egg, dilled kimchi and gefilte fish cake that’s shaken before being served. Old-world and new-world selections populate the wine list, including lesser known varietals like Gamay alongside a Merlot from Saint Emilion, Bordeaux and bottles from new and upcoming wine regions like Lebanon, and they pair well with the cooking. Head to the lounge after your meal or perhaps browse the chic offerings at the boutique beforehand to make an evening out of this one-stop shop.
