GupShup Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: Restaurateur Jimmy Rizvi and chef Gurpreet Singh are behind this Bombay-inspired restaurant and cocktail bar in Gramercy. The two levels of GupShup are decorated in bright, life-size murals in a style that seems to harken to 1970s Bombay. One wall is lined with 3,000 tiffins, the tin containers used to deliver lunches to Mumbai office workers. Plush green velvet booths and black-and-white checkered floors echo the cheerful retro vibe.

Likes: Kulchas; colorful décor; cocktails; saag paneer.
Dislikes: Music can be loud.

Food & Drinks: “GupShup” means chit-chat in Hindi, and this friendly, modern food is perfect for lingering over with some friendly gossip. Choose from the many kulchas on offer, like one stuffed with garlic, coriander and spinach. Some dishes are inventive, such as spare ribs seasoned with mango chutney and served with micro greens dressed in absinthe, and roasted bone marrow with five-spice naan. Others stay true to the classic Indian canon, among them butter chicken and a bright, fresh-tasting saag paneer. House chutneys are hit and miss --- the tequila-spiked smoked pineapple mostly just tasted sweet, but the roasted eggplant was complex and flavorful. With most options priced under $20, it’s worth getting a selection for the table to share. End with a banana and fig bread pudding, served with saffron rum anglaise. Wines are reasonably priced, too, or try a cocktail like the Goan Sunrise with vodka, cucumber, basil, green chartreuse and egg white.
