Like a number of other classics on Kauai, Hanamaulu Restaurant is still worth a visit, although its popularity is perhaps as much due to habit as the food. Folks are used to coming here for family parties and dinners, and they can count on finding their old favorites on the menu. The Miyake family has owned this restaurant for three generations, and they're certainly conversant with the art of cooking. Their Japanese gardens and koi ponds are also lovely, so it's wise to bypass the austere main dining room in the front and reserve a table in the back, where the doors open onto the gardens. The rambling building also houses an intimate sushi bar, which overlooks a second manicured garden and koi pond. The menu features both Chinese and Japanese food. Dishes on the Chinese side include lup cheong (Chinese sausage), kau yuk (pot-roasted pork loin) and crispy-fried ginger chicken, while Japanese entrées range from beef, chicken or pork sukiyaki to fish, chicken or beef teriyaki. The wine list is small; sample the saké instead.
