Just what you might expect to find at the edge of a sprawling college campus is a tavern like Hank’s, where such faves as fish tacos and Maryland crab cakes are featured players. The menu is so all-American that picking the right dish for the right mood challenges the hungry eater. Should you start with three appetizers, such as onion rings, sautéed mussels, and tater skins crammed with melted cheese and bacon bits? Maybe just settle on a light salad, such as the baby spinach with sautéed onions and bacon, so you can save up your calories for The Hank Burger or the Cajun chicken sandwich. But since you are offered a rarity in these parts --- a classic po’ boy --- your best bet is the shrimp po’ boy. At least 15 mid-size shrimp are battered and crispy fried and perched on a soft roll. Forget the roll: eat the shrimp solo after dipping each in the accompanying sambar aïoli. Desserts are limited, like an Oreo cake. The bar is stocked with ample brews and if you want extra diversion, the tavern boasts of at least ten overhead TVs tuned to assorted channels.
