Avoid the hour-plus waits at trendier spots nearby, and head straight to Helser's for a relaxing breakfast or brunch. While there's nothing earth-shatteringly surprising on the menu, all the breakfast foods are prepared with love and care. It's one of the few places where that love-it-or-hate-it Scottish standard, a Scotch egg (sausage wrapped around a boiled egg, that's then deep-fried) is on the menu. Variations on potatoes (mushroom or bacon-cheddar hash, and potato pancakes) are a fine choice, as are egg dishes such as a black bean chili scramble and a shrimp omelet. Carb cravers will enjoy the brioche french toast and German pancakes. For earlier risers, the Monday through Friday special from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. is a good value, offering standard bacon and egg plates, but also more interesting choices such as a grilled polenta and black bean cake with two eggs. There's a varied kids’ menu, and endless refills on quality coffee. You may also order a few lunch items such as a Greek salad or a falafel wrap, but Helser's heart is devoted to breakfast.
