Henkes Restaurant Review:
Australian chef Craig Willis started off with the Wagas chain of cafés but has in his subsequent ventures been pushing more and more upmarket. Henkes, his mother’s maiden name, is the pinnacle so far. It is nestled in the corner of a shopping mall that is home to luxury brands. Encompassing both a café and restaurant, the dark interior is designed around the open kitchen. There is an emphasis on sharing. We recommend getting all five of the antipasti, with the roast marinated peppers being the standout. Pizzas are a specialty with a purpose-built brick oven; however, the mains (grilled or roasted) are equally satisfying. While sides are available they are not strictly necessary as all mains come sensibly balanced. Desserts involve a twist on old favorites: crème caramel gets flavored with orange and cardamom; a chocolate éclair contains a lemon cream. Service by Shanghai standards is reasonably attentive.
