THIS RESTAURANT HAS CHANGED LOCATIONS Hilo Bay Cafe Restaurant Review:
It is not easy to characterize Hilo's oh-so-popular urban-chic, healthy-gourmet bistro, tucked away next to a Wal-Mart. An offshoot of Hilo's Island Natural Market health-food store, the Hilo Bay Café sports lightly-tinted windows and a modern cream and black décor that makes you forget its mundane parking lot setting. Chef Joshua Ketner is having fun. Where else might you find shrimp and grits on the same menu as praline-macadamia nut crusted scallops? Items include pita bread stuffed with scrumptious chicken salads, or ahi poke appetizers, poached shrimp and asparagus salad, and vegetarian selections such as pot pie and sweet potato flax burger. An inexpensive and diverse menu showcases an abundance of organically grown, local produce. The meats are of the free-range, antibiotic-free variety. And while the wine list may not be pages long, the choices offered are selected with care and sensitivity.
