For those seeking a friendly and affordable (and less crowded than the Ferry Plaza) refuge for lunch downtown, Il Massimo Lounge offers an alternative. The bright, sunny spot is meant, as you may note from the name, for lounging---either over a morning espresso and the newspaper, or during a late afternoon lunch. As happy hour begins so often does the live music, which can be anything from DJ to jazz to opera. Equally interesting to the surrounding work world will be the 16 varieties of freshly-made panini sandwiches and 12 salads. Try the prosciutto and goat cheese on grilled focaccia or the grilled eggplant and zucchini with Swiss cheese and red pepper spread on grilled filone bread.
