: Imo’s pizza causes no ambivalence --- it's either loved or hated. Toppings are typical; the distinctions arise in the cracker-thin crust, square pieces, a sweet-tangy tomato sauce and gobs of Provel cheese (a gooey, tooth-sticking combination of cheddar, Swiss and provolone that’s unique to St. Louis). House salads, festooned with more of the same cheese, are simple but not bad, except for the sweet house dressing. Provel also features heavily in the pastas and sandwiches, and it’s a tasty appetizer when breaded, fried and dipped in meat sauce. The desserts, however --- iced cinnamon sticks and apple crisp --- are Provel-free. Imo’s has embraced technology, with online ordering and daily specials revealed via social media sites. Overlook the nonexistent décor: Imo's is a St. Louis tradition for the food, not the setting. Even here in deepest South St. Louis, where ethnic food has permeated nearly every block, Imo’s fills a niche craving. |
