Sometimes the eight dining rooms at this funky old inn really swing. Head here on a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends for live jazz and noisy camaraderie. If you’re seeking tranquility, request a table in one of the quieter rooms upstairs and settle down to a substantial, all-American meal, kicked off with a hot pumpernickel-raisin loaf. Dinners offer some fairly interesting yet plain food, with such starters as grilled quail or a sensual roasted butternut squash soup. Depending on the season, main courses may include grilled sea bass, pork loin stuffed with pears or the delicious lamb shank, slow-roasted with herbs and served with a Gorgonzola polenta.
