Ippolito’s bills its mini-chain as Atlanta’s family style Italian restaurants. And, indeed, you will find lots of families around the booths and big tables enjoying large portions of red-sauced pastas, veal, pizza and chicken entrées. Dévotées tell us there’s some variation among the locations as to food quality. Still all are popular. Some patrons can’t take the wait, which can be very long especially on weekends, and go for a carry-out order instead, further jamming the restaurant’s entryway. Heady aromas from the kitchen will almost make you forget the crowds, the kids and the TVs blaring ESPN. For those wishing to test the kitchen’s more complex dishes, go straight to the Ippolito’s specialties page on the lengthy menu. Two of our favorites: chicken and eggplant served over spaghettini with red sauce and three cheeses; and spicy Italian sausage with fresh peppers, tossed with your choice of pasta. The typical manicotti, calzone and similar classics of Italian-American cooking are very well done here. Vegetarians---and others---will love the broccoli linguine. For dessert, try a house-made cannoli and you’re back in Little Italy. Each location does its own daily specials, but the central menu is common to all.
