J. Bistro hasn't lost its touch one bit. From the stylish bread and veggie basket to the board with the day's menu attached to it with rubber bands, this longtime Mount Pleasant spot preserves its distinctive appeal. True to its name, expect bistro dishes like grouper over mashed potatoes with Champagne cream sauce. The menu, divided into "land" and "sea," offers competent steaks as well, particularly the filet served over a blue cheese and potato cake that will nearly make you forget about the meat. Desserts are satisfying, too, and rich, especially the bread pudding french toast that is an exercise in indulgent excess. Many Mount Pleasant locals enjoy brunch on a regular basis with its stone-ground grits and egg dishes, but dinner is "J. Beest's" best side.
