One of the first big Monterey Park-style restaurants to open on the Westside, J.R. has a plain décor, but its Cantonese seafood specialties are tops. In the gurgling tanks, choose from clams, jumbo shrimp, crabs, lobsters and a variety of seawater and freshwater fish, all priced by the pound. (You may not know the damage until the bill is presented.) The shrimp with spicy salt is so irresistible that only the cruelest of cardiologists would forbid it. For the adventurous, there’s jelly fish with or without octopus.
