Jack and Tony's Restaurant and Whisky Bar Restaurant Review:

Jack and Tony’s fits nimbly into Railroad Square, drawing tourists strolling from nearby hotels and Santa Rosans tickled by their real restaurant row. The name harks back to the Mad Men era---a joint to throw back a steak and a shot and feel masculine. What with 170-ish whiskies on the list, wines here fall a bit to the wayside. Have a wee dram, create a custom flight, or choose a three-course prix-fixe whisky-paired menu (yes, including dessert). But J & T’s is also inclusive. For one thing, other than lobster and filet, entrées hover thoughtfully under $20. They’re for anyone with an appetite, generously-sized and meant to comfort in a way that’s retro not stodgy. Hanger steak features thick slices of meat fanned over soft red onion rounds with fries and homemade ketchup; tangy buttermilk fried chicken akin to two super-size all-breast nuggets comes with buttered corn on the cob, memorable slaw and watermelon wedges; and hand-rolled fettuccine Alfredo is bolstered with bacon and mushrooms. Napkins are necessary. Befores include oysters, a trio of scallops wrapped in smoky bacon with apple risotto, not-for-sissies crisp-skinned quail with chorizo stuffing, and salad classics from “the wedge” to crab Louie.
