![]() : Tooling the back roads and 90-degree curves of the Alexander Valley, you’ll eventually bump into this cheerful, old-fashioned country market, a landmark since the 1890s. The front of the house serves as a catch-all, retro-chic general store. Opposite the bric-a-brac, a café counter creates monthly specials that zing. Stop in for a quick refresher of espresso, lemonade or bottled beer on the front porch, or sit down for mains such as avocado tartine, breakfast burritos or chicken potpie. Picnickers also like this pitstop for its made-to-order sandwiches, salads and chili. Crunch half-sour pickles, near-impossible to find out West. Try the mixed olive tapenade (fig and spicy versions optional) scooped onto baguettes with Brie. They have tubs of the spread to go. Be sure to check out the country antique shop adjacent to the parking lot. (Photo by George Wells Photography) |
