Like all the Johnny Leverock’s venues, there’s a view of the water outside and an array of nautical nick-nacks on the walls inside. This is the oldest seafood chain (launched in 1948) on the west coast of Florida. The story behind the seafood restaurants is that one Johnny Leverock operated a service station near St. Petersburg and won an oyster bed in a card game. So he opened a raw oyster bar and chowder house---and that developed into a chain of restaurants up and down the West Coast. Specialties include tropical coconut shrimp; onion-crusted salmon; crabmeat with Dijon mayonnaise sauce; and salmon Wellington (salmon in Florentine sauce wrapped in a pastry shell and topped with hollandaise).
