This is a do-it-yourself yakiniku restaurant, where diners cook their meals on built-in table grills in the popular barbecue style that traveled to Japan from Korea some 30 years ago. The elegant, modern environment, almost austere, is colored by dramatic flower arrangements. A typical meal consists of meats, seafood or vegetables presented for grilling, with accompaniments such as Juban's dipping sauce, small plates of mild kimchi, soup and rice. The thinly sliced raw beef tongue, grilled and eaten with a squeeze of lemon juice, is particularly good. Food here can be quick, too: the sliced rib-eye cooks in about 20 seconds. Juban has two other locations in Burlingame and Menlo Park.
