Far from the sushi and sashimi sampler offered at most Japanese restaurants, Kaï takes the diner on a gastronomic journey from the Nippon peninsula to Europe, with specialties like tonkatsu-don, pork with red miso sauce; ohitashi, or marinated spinach; sakamushi, saké-steamed duck; and chawanmushi, a sort of egg custard. You'll even find scrambled eggs and steamed foie gras on the serious and surprising menu, which, rest assured, also features favorites like sushi and tempura. The pure, peaceful décor is adorned only with finely set tables and fresh orchids. While prices are on the high side, this special occasion Japanese is not to be missed.
