: Situated in the more secluded top bank of Houhai, stylish Ken de Rouge offers an escape from the tourist madness of Lotus Lane. The interior is a cross between a “Tomb Raider”-inspired industrial zone---heavy steel doors, stark concrete walls and floors---and an imperial China of red beams and bamboo. The ground floor has an open kitchen, the second floor superior views of the lake via a glass wall, with the rooftop dedicated to summertime barbecues. Described as fusion, dishes are more local than global, and range from crispy prawns with cumin to five different kinds of wild mushrooms with cheese. The menu is designed to impress, being heavy on the seafood and Cognac-based sauces. There is a long list of Chinese rice wines. |
