For folks who don’t mind eating in a sports bar, Killer B’s is one of Santa Barbara’s go-to spots for hearty American fare. Barbecue may play first-string (they smoke their own meats on site and make their own barbecue sauces and rubs), but there are also fresh salads and healthy wraps --- and all salads can be served as wraps. Soups are made in-house daily. Vegetarian dishes include a fire-grilled portobello mushroom sandwich topped with melted Swiss and tangy balsamic reduction. But make no mistake, barbecue and brews are the main draw, such as smoked brisket and hand-pulled pork. Go for the combo plate for what the place does best: ribs. Two large beef ribs, three baby-back ribs and three smaller spare ribs are yours, along with a choice of eight different sides like onion rings or coleslaw, though the sides are unremarkable. There are also combos of chicken and tri-tip. Local ales come from Firestone-Walker and Figueroa Mountain breweries. Service, while friendly and efficient, is decidedly geared toward guys. Inevitably, the combination of it all attracts a raucous crowd, particularly at game time.
