THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW RESTAURANT CINQ. A truly romantic restaurant in an historic boutique hotel, La Colombe d’Or offers fine French dining in the former home of Houston oil baron W. W. Fondren. The menu is modern French cuisine from the Riviera mixed with a healthy dose of Texas beef and wild game. The lobster bisque topped with lump crab meat is one of the best in Houston, especially when you add a dollop of brandy. Meat dishes reign supreme here, with the simply prepared Prime tenderloin of beef leading the pack. The filet, tender as a whisper, is sliced into roulades and served in a broth-y sauce with hearty seasonal vegetables. Salmon and grilled fish dishes also shine, and an old favorite, salade de crabe et avocat, vinaigrette a’ l’orange features lump crab meat drizzled with an orange vinaigrette made with a hint of balsamic vinegar and black pepper and paper-thin slices of fresh avocado and garden tomatoes. The real stars, however, are the desserts. Chocolate lovers should partake in the palette de chocolate, a mosaic of white, light and dark chocolate mousses, some spiked with liqueurs. An extensive wine list proffers mostly French selections and the restaurant serves its own label from Provence.
