Stepping into la Madeleine Bakery is like setting foot into a traditional country café in France---although the décor is a bit cliché. As restaurant chains go, la Madeleine is one of the finer and more consistent. Favorites are the tossed Caesar salad, the best around for the price. Try the creamy tomato-basil soup with lots of butter and cream; the puff pastry spinach pochettes; and, for dessert, strawberries Romanoff with brandy-flavored cream sauce. Also noteworthy is rosemary rotisserie chicken. The pseudo-French décor is cheerful though très cliché. Other locations.
