Openings

Corner Bar Management has acquired La Comida at 100 S. Sixth St. and renamed it La Mona Rosa. While keeping the Mexico City-inspired design of the 3,500-square-foot space, Corner Bar’s owner Ryan Doherty has kept the 7-foot pink neon monkey that clings to the side of the building as homage to Jenna and Michael Morton, who opened La Comida in 2013. The kitchen is overseen by executive chefs Daniel Arias and Isidro Marquez-Castillo, who also helm Corner Bar’s Peyote just blocks away on Fremont St. The cuisine celebrates Mexico’s diverse regions through elevated takes on traditional dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients complemented by handcrafted cocktails, margaritas and imported beer. New to the venue will be a stage which will be used for a range of live entertainment and nightlife experiences. CHĪ Asian Kitchen is now open at The STRAT Hotel & Casino & SkyPod. Taken from the Chinese word meaning “eat,” CHĪ Asian Kitchen serves an array of authentic and reimagined Asian dishes. Reminiscent of a bustling Chinese alley restaurant, the street-inspired interior includes a variety of traditional and unique design touches. Read more. Chef Shawn McClain has opened his newest Las Vegas restaurant, Balla Italian Soul, at SAHARA Las Vegas. Décor elements include a bricked ceiling reminiscent of Roman wine cellars and wood and brass fixtures anchored by lit olive trees and Italian photography. The menu features seasonally driven aspects of Italian cuisine and meats prepared in a wood-fired oven. Antipasti selections include marinated octopus with Calabrian pepper; lamb tartare with pickled eggplant; and shellfish toast with clams, mussels, calamari and ‘’Nduja sausage. Pasta selections include linguini with crab, squid ink shells with puttanesca and agnolotti with formaggio. Wood-fired dishes include 22 oz Prime bone-in ribeye with roasted garlic and pork Delmonico withpickled radicchio. An Italian-forward, wines-by-the-glass list and selection of domestic and Italian beers is designed to please a range of palates. After operating out of the Vegas Test Kitchen for the last two years, Yukon Pizza will go brick and mortar, opening in the Huntridge Shopping Center at 1130 E. Charleston in late November 2022. Named for founder Alex White’s great-great-grandpa Gilbert, who started the family sourdough yeast culture during the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon Territories, the starter has been used for more than 100 years and continues to be used in the pizzas. Signature pies include the Y-train—classic New York style with New York tomato sauce, oregano, parmesan, mozzarella, roasted garlic oil and basil; Grandpa White—white pie topped with garlic oil, oregano, mozzarella, whole milk mozzarella slices, parmesan, fresh basil and ricotta dollops; Neapolitan style pepperoni with parmesan, San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and pepperoni; and hey, I’m Vegan here! featuring vegan mozzarella, New York sauce and fresh basil. Chef Matt Meyer’s 138° has launched weekend brunch service, available Saturday & Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Highlights of the menu include king salmon lox with heirloom tomato, capers, chive hollandaise and black caviar; Korean spicy pork bulgogi & egg with house kimchi, pickled radish and house cheese sauce; pupusas El Salvadorian breakfast featuring soft corn masa stuffed with cheese, topped with cabbage, red salsa, house brisket and a sunny egg; steak & eggs with 16 oz. Perigo Ranch NY strip, three eggs your style and house or potato salad; Anderson grass-fed lamb burger with herbed goat cheese, lemon sumac onion and fig jam; Anson Mills cornmeal pancakes with wild berry compote; waffle with roasted pumpkin, house cultured sweet cream and pie crust; street tacos; and 138° burger with brie crips, confit shallot, parm crisp and house ‘A1.’ The dishes are augmented by classic cocktails such as bloody Mary, French 75, bellinis and mimosas. 138°, 1450 W. Ellis Island Selling Holiday Nog
Ellis Island’s yearly Ellis Family Holiday Nog, now in its 20th year of commercial production, is now available for purchase. The dairy-based beverage fortified with bourbon, rum and brandy is a closely guarded family recipe with a tradition that began when Ellis Island owner Gary Ellis’ grandfather, Frank Ellis, Sr., learned about the recipe from a fellow passenger on a ship taking him from Italy to the U.S. back in 1953; in the 1980s, after his grandfather passed away, Gary Ellis found the recipe and began making small batches in his home kitchen. The Holiday Nog is available by the glass ($8) or by the bottle ($38). Customers can purchase it until it’s sold out at Ellis Island Casino & Brewery or any of the 14 Village Pub locations. Chef Shawn McLain’s newly opened Balla Italian Soul at SAHARA Las Vegas has announced Michael Vargas as executive chef. Vargas brings 18 years of experience in operations for upscale restaurants and hotels and offers expertise in gastronomy, creative menu development, leadership, training and restaurant development. Prior to joining Balla he served as executive chef for T-Bones Chophouse inside Red Rock Resort as well as Sadelle’s inside the Bellagio Hotel & Casino. Additional past culinary roles include executive sous chef at Carbone at ARIA and assistant chef for catering at ARIA, chef de partie at Twist by Pierre Gagnaire at Mandarin Oriental and junior sous chef at MOzen Bistro at Mandarin Oriental and tenured several positions at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas and the Fairmont Princess in Scottsdale, Arizona.
