Too often a restaurant is called “charming” simply because it resides in an antiquated building or because of its longevity. This, happily, is not the case with Lola. From the moment you wind your way through the garden gate and the turn-of-the-century doors, you will be genuinely charmed. The daily menu is a two-, three- or four-course prix-fixe meal that combines contemporary American nuances with stylish global trappings. A fine example is the semolina gnocchi plated with mushrooms and braised greens or the smoked duck breast pooled in a cider jus and sided with mashed sweet potatoes and cabbage swathed in butter. Enormous care has gone into creating a menu that pairs well with the wine list, a carefully chosen 40-page assemblage that includes bottles to appease every budget.
