THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Lotus Restaurant Review:

The arrival of Tyson Ophaso, who previously headed up the kitchen at Nong, resulted in a complete menu overhaul here: a relatively expensive French prix-fixe was replaced with reasonably priced urban Asian street fare. Ophaso has since departed, replaced by chef Filomeno Ramirez, but the dishes are still primarily Thai and Vietnamese, incorporating influences from throughout Asia. Appetizers include Spring and Summer rolls, as well as a first-rate grilled filet mignon salad with lime juice, mint, basil, red onion, chili and toasted rice. The entrée list features curries and several nice fish preparations, including an impressive-looking black cod in a soy-barbecue sauce. The menu definitely works better in the dark lounge-like space by offering the young clientele a spicy, tasty cuisine that they can share while enjoying a few exotic cocktails. Sommelier Taylor Kaye has taken advantage of the menu by putting together a wonderfully eclectic wine list. Start with one of his house-infused sakés (cucumber or pineapple), and then have Taylor assist you in matching your dishes with a fun wine list that features (on the Summer list) everything from Hungarian Tokaji's to a Gewürztraminer from Italy. He leans toward some smaller wineries, so the list changes frequently. Being a hip, tri-level club-lounge-restaurant in the hopping Meatpacking District, it's easy to spend your whole night at Lotus (no weekend cover charge for those with dinner reservations).
