A rustic-chic beer-centric Portuguese tavern shines in Chelsea.
THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Lupulo Restaurant Review:
Chef George Mendes has graced the New York dining scene with his elevated takes on Portuguese cuisine at Aldea. Here at his second effort, a “cervejaria,” he brings it down a notch serving up Portuguese tavern-style fare. Sip a glass of unfiltered lager chosen from among the dozen beers on tap, one of which is Portuguese, or select something from the all-Portuguese wine list and peruse the menu of small and large plates. Begin the meal with crispy shrimp turnovers, half-moon-shaped and addictive, and the soft salt cod croquettes. Arriving in a cast iron pot, the baked octopus with rice, olive and cilantro is a satisfying shareable entrée. Grilled cod, layered with potatoes and egg and also baked in a cast iron pot, nearly outshines the octopus. Desserts are a disappointment, so order another beer or a porto and take in the rustic-chic ambience at this Chelsea spot.
