Much more a take-out establishment and market than a restaurant, Maranto's does offer table service in the middle of a room lined with shelves packed with New Orleans canned goods and cookbooks, as well as an array of bottled hot sauces that numbers in the hundreds. The cooking is basically New Orleans Creole-Cajun of the honest, old-fashioned kind. We recommend the muffaletta sandwich for take-out. The small version (small compared only to its big brother) feeds two easily. For hot food, consider Big Easy classics such as gumbo, shrimp Creole, chicken and sausage jambalaya, and red beans with rice. Worthy desserts include the bread pudding and peach cobbler.
