THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mary Hoopa's House of Fried Chicken & Oysters Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant & décor: Armed with a wicked sense of humor and serious culinary skills, Robert Phalen of One Eared Stag opened a singular spot in a redeveloping part of town. Mary Hoopa was his mother-in-law's nanny, and the recipe he uses for fried chicken is inspired by her methodology. The simple, contemporary décor takes advantage of rough-hewn wood siding and industrial elements in the ceiling to craft a casual yet sophisticated space. A variety of seating options includes several two-tops, making the restaurant good for a casual date.
Food & Drinks: The "snacks" section offers a wide array of interesting dishes that could compose a "tapas" style meal. We liked the grilled oysters with confit garlic, fermented lemon, chervil and butter, and look forward to sampling the shrimp rémoulade, clam wraps and beer-battered smelt. But fried chicken is the draw, and we found the house fried, prepared to order, juicy and piping hot. A half Springer Mountain bird gets you enough to take home for another meal. Other mains also are available. For dessert, all made in-house, try the Key lime ice cream topped with graham cracker pieces. The wine list, while short, offers well-priced and interesting selections. If you bring your own wine, the corkage fee is $25. The beer list is all craft, and there are cocktails.
